Communication is KEY
Ralu and I have been given the opportunity to counsel several people lately. It’s something we prayed for and God has blessed us with far more than we could have imagined at this point.
A common theme lately has been communication–the need to communicate effectively and problems that arise when you don’t.
Scripture tells us that life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). James further warns us about the effects of the tongue–saying that it is set on fire by hell, no man can tame it, and it leads us to praise God and then curse the men He created in His image (James 3:3-12). Paul tells us we should speak only things that build one another up (Ephesians 4:29).
So be careful how you talk to people, especially to those you love. Stop and think BEFORE you talk sometimes so you don’t have to go into damage control mode after. Check your motives before you speak–are you TRYING to cause pain, to punish, to belittle? And TALK about stuff! If something bothers you, confront it. The more you leave unsaid, the more you open the door to miscommunication. Tell people how you feel and what you’re thinking so they don’t have a chance to assume. And the next time you feel wronged or offended by someone, ask if they realize how their actions affected you. You’ll usually find that they had no intention to hurt you.
So go communicate people. Apologize when you’re wrong. Forgive when you’ve been hurt. And when you love someone, TELL them–with your actions and your words.
